Empty Bowls was a 2 credit course that culminated in a fundraising event. The class required that each student designed and made 15 or more soup bowls to be fired and distributed at the event. We also created posters and web pages to publicize the event. It was a great success and raised over $1,000 for a charity called Micah's backpack that fights food scarcity for elementary school children in Southwestern Virginia. I designed a slip cast bowl made with a 3 part mold. To make the mold I sketched a profile and turned a piece of poplar on a lathe to achieve the positive form. I then used the form to create a plaster mold for slip-casting.
